How Secure is Cable?

The baseline privacy requirement of the DOCSIS standard provides 56-bit DES encrypted data transactions on the cable plant, between each modem and the headend.

Data transmissions within the cable network employ this baseline privacy (encryption). Once the data leaves the cable network to go other places, it is not encrypted by the cable system. So, in summary, data transactions between a user’s modem and the CMTS (headend) unit employ encryption.
