Burstable Bandwidth

Like any other standard dedicated, high-speed Internet service, Burstable Internet customers choose the base bandwidth for their Internet access that best suits their network needs. This base bandwidth is chosen from the one of five fixed base bandwidth tiers. Each tier sets an estimated sustained rate of data transfer the customer expects to utilize during normal operation: an average usage figure that best fits typical day-to-day activities. The customer then establishes a “burstable” limit on the very high end that functions as the extreme maximum usage anticipated

for their service. The customer’s usage is then technically unable of “spiking” or bursting beyond this high-end limit.

This burstable service differs from a standard T3, OC-3, OC-12, or EtherPoint connection in one significant way: the customer sets the maximum amount of bandwidth anticipated for heavy network activity, when spikes occur. Burstable allows the customer to burst from their chosen base bandwidth all the way up to the specified maximum burstable bandwidth.

Base Bandwidth – The sustained data transfer rate chosen by the customer.

Maximum Burstable Bandwidth – The maximum data transfer rate the customer cannot exceed.

  • Tier 1: Customers establish a base sustained bandwidth speed of 1.5 Mbps.
  • Tier 2: Customers establish a base sustained bandwidth speed rated between 2 Mbps to 5 Mbps, then set a burstable data rate up to the speed of the transport.
  • Tier 3: Customers establish a base sustained bandwidth speed rated between 6 Mbps to 20 Mbps then set a burstable data rate up to the speed of the transport.
  • Tier 4: Customers establish a base sustained bandwidth speed rated between 25Mbps to 100 Mbps, then set a burstable data rate up to the speed of the transport.
  • Tier 5: Customers establish a base sustained bandwidth speed over 100 Mbps, then burst up to the speed of the transport.
